MMarion Vassilakosarion retired from a fulfilling career as a librarian in 1991 to become active in the League of Women Voters, the Laubach Literacy movement, the Fullerton Art Museum at CSUSB, the City Charter Revision Committee, the Steering committee for two failed library tax measures (both of which gained a majority vote, but not the super majority required by California law). She is also a director on the board of Friends of Highland Library and Friends of San Bernardino Public Library and most recent is an appointment to the SBCUSD Citizen’s Oversight Committee for Measure T as a Library Board member.

As a child living in rural suburb of Chicago, Marion’s family had no access to a local public library. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Northern Illinois University, Marion began teaching in secondary schools. She switched to a career as research associate for Encyclopedia Britannica, utilizing resources at Chicago Public and John Crerar (engineering) Libraries. Ultimately she succeeded in her quest to establish a library research office at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she wanted to live. That relocation led to a degree in librarianship from the University of Washington as well as skills such as mountain climbing and skiing.

Dimitri and Marion have lived in San Bernardino for 45 years, during which their children and grandchildren attended and graduated from local schools. Dimitri was the catalyst for the Feldheym Library’s donor wall, the design and labor have been solicited from local businessmen.

Her commitment to this nation’s unique public library service is grounded in the imperative that public libraries are essential for the success of a viable democracy.
